about

The Film:

Finnish proverb “Evil men don’t die easily, God doesn’t want them, the Devil can wait…”

A determined young woman and a bitter old soldier are trapped in a cycle of abuse and violence in an isolated cabin where causality and identity are fractured. Who will win? And what does winning look like? A young woman named Satu finds herself alone in the countryside. She meets former soldier Lauri who offers her shelter from an impending storm. She soon begins to find herself questioning her own reality.

The Soundtrack:

To capture the sound of Scandinavian folk horror, co-composers Tom Nettleship and Daisy Coole used both ancient and contemporary instruments of the region, working with folk artist Anna Tam to record jouhikko, nyckelharpa, cello and vocals.

The dark elements of the score centre around the visceral, textured, grainy sound of the jouhikko, a traditional, three-stringed bowed lyre loaned to Anna Tam by a druid. Through warping and distorting the recordings of the jouhikko and the brighter and more lush-sounding Nyckelharpa (often used to represent Satu's innocence), Daisy and Tom created a sense of unreality and ‘uncanny valley’, reflecting Satu’s loss of self as she is trapped in an endless cycle of violence.

The score also uses vocals recorded by Anna Tam and Daisy to create eerie, shifting microtonal choral textures. These choral moments often appear as we revisit Satu’s ‘rebirth’, hinting at an almost religious experience.

Another Day to Live Through is set in a warped, timeless state where the narrative is non-linear, as is the lead character, Satu's understanding of her own journey. Set deep in the Finnish forest, the film's director Peter Simmons offered the phrase 'deep time', something ancient and everlasting. Satu's cyclical wandering through the forest is often underscored by the ancient sounds of the goat horn and jouhikko, both raw and primeval, reflecting her deepest, darkest self.
